Discovering Gurdaspur: A City of History and Diversity




Gurdaspur, a city nestled in the northern Indian state of Punjab, is a treasure trove of history, culture, and diversity. Located between the Beas and Ravi rivers, Gurdaspur serves as the administrative headquarters of the district bearing the same name. The city’s rich history dates back to the 17th century and is named after Mahant Guriya das ji.

A Historical Perspective

Gurdaspur is home to several historical sites that bear witness to its rich past. One such site is Kalanaur, known for being the coronation site of the Mughal emperor Akbar in 1556. This historical town houses a fort, a mosque, and the tomb of the saint Kamaluddin, offering a glimpse into the region’s Mughal past.

The city is also a melting pot of various religions. Qadian, a town in Gurdaspur district, is the birthplace of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, the founder of the Ahmadiyya movement in Islam. The town is dotted with several mosques, shrines, and museums related to the Ahmadiyya community, making it a significant site for followers of the movement.

The Industrial Hub: Batala

Batala, the second-largest city in the district, is an industrial hub known for its religious diversity. The cityscape is punctuated with temples, gurdwaras, churches, and mosques, reflecting the harmonious coexistence of different faiths. Batala is also the birthplace of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, adding to its religious significance.

The Sacred Site: Dera Baba Nanak

Another noteworthy site is Dera Baba Nanak, a sacred place for Sikhs. It is the final resting place of Guru Nanak, and the gurdwara here houses some of his relics, including his robe, shoes, and staff.

Education: 

Gurdaspur has many elementary secondary level schools and 13 degree-level and engineering colleges. Beant College of Engineering and Technology, is among them, founded by then Chief Minister Beant Singh in 1995. A nationally accredited body by the Ministry of Tourism Institute of Hotel Management, Catering & Nutrition is also located in Gurdaspur.
